2nd day of the visit (3rd March) to The Bahamas, Florida & Cayman Islands

visit on behalf of The Duke of Edinburgh's International Award Foundation & 100 Women in Hedge Funds' Next Generation Initiatives

Second day of the visit (3rd March, Thursday) - Bahamas, Nassau
Yesterday, The Earl and Countess of Wessex undertook the following engagements in Nassau, the Bahamas.

In the afternoon, The Countess of Wessex called upon Her Excellency Dame Marguerite Pindling, Governor General of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas, at Government House.

HRH subsequently attended a Luncheon at Government House, hosted by The Governor General in the State Dining Room. Invited guests were a small group of outstanding women of the community.

Her Royal Highness later visited Garvin Tynes Primary School and its Centre for Autism. The school is named in honour of an outstanding educator Mr. Garvin Jervis Tynes. The Countess of Wessex was accompanied by Minister of the Environment and Housing, Hon. Kenred Dorsett.

HRH has toured the Autism Unit at Garvin Tynes Primary School, which was opened in 2006. Afterwards, Sophie spoke to the assembly of students, faculty and parents of school. She was also presented with handmade gifts by some of the students. Article at The Bahamas Weekly, click here.

Later, The Countess of Wessex attended a Ground Breaking Ceremony for the Hearing Centre of the Bahamas, formerly known as 'Red Cross Centre for The Deaf Children'. The centre was established in 1964, out of a need to cater to the growing number of hearing impaired children in Bahamian society.

Today, it is a joint effort of The Red Cross Society and the Department of Education; a partnership in which the Red Cross provides the building while the Department of Education is responsible for the curriculum, staff (teachers) and professional development of the staff. Later, His Royal Highness, as Trustee of The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Foundation, visited St. Augustine College & C.V. Bethel Senior High School. During those visits Prince Edward could meet with small groups of bronze, silver and gold Duke of Edinburgh's Award participants who presented their art and craft works. In the afternoon, Prince Edward attended Rangers’ Divisions, where HRH addressed Rangers who are also participants in GGYA. This event was followed by a Lunch at the Royal Bahamas Defence Force Headquarters, HMBS Coral Harbour. Article with much more info here.

In the evening, The Earl of Wessex, Trustee, and The Countess of Wessex, Global Ambassador of The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Foundation, attended a Reception for young people who have achieved the Gold Standard in the Award at Queen’s College. Prime Minister Perry Christie, Dame Marguerite and Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture Dr. Daniel Johnson were in attendance along with other dignitaries.

Approximately 34 persons from eight schools (five from New Providence and three from Grand Bahama) were presented with their certificates of achievement by the Governor General and then 'pinned' by Prince Edward, who said: “What you do outside the classroom is just as important as your education and it should be recognized”.

Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture the Hon. Dr. Daniel Johnson, said about the Award: “To date, over 10,000 people have passed through the programme and none of them, I have no record of any of them in jail or in trouble”.

Students of Queen’s College and other well-wishers waved flags as the Royal Couple greeted them on their arrival. The school’s band serenaded the audience prior to and during the event.

Afterwards, TRH's attended a private Dinner at the Royal Nassau Sailing Club, hosted by Cameron Symonette, a member of the World Fellowship.
