Today, on the 13th of July, The Countess of Wessex, as Colonel-in-Chief of Queen Alexandra's Royal Army Nursing Corps attended a ceremony for the presentation of the Firmin Sword of Peace to 5 Medical Armoured Regiment for their humanitarian work in Sierra Leone and Kenya. The Firmin Sword of Peace was first instituted as the Wilkinson Sword of Peace in 1966 and is awarded each year to the unit of the UK's armed services judged to have made the most valuable contribution towards establishing good and friendly relations with any community at home or overseas over and above the unit's normal role and duty. There are four Swords of Peace awarded each year, one each to the Army, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force, as well as a Joint Service Award.

The sword of peace was first handed over to HRH by Mr Tony Kelly of sword makers Firmin. Her Royal Highness, in turn, then handed over the gleaming sword to Lance Corporal Danielle Pattinson. Danielle was selected for the honour of receiving the sword as she was the most junior member of the Regiment during both its deployment to Sierra Leone and when it took part on Exercise ASKARI SERPENT in the wilds of Kenya.

Speaking of the part she played in receiving the sword on behalf of, and in front of her whole Regiment L/Cpl Danielle Pattinson said, ‘It was such an honour to be selected and to be truthful a bit nerve wracking having to step forward in front of all my mates to receive such a beautiful piece of craftsmanship from a member of the Royal Family, but it all went well and the Countess was really interested to hear of what the regiment had been up to.’

On 13 August 2014, 5 Medical Regiment celebrated its Centenary and on 1 September 2014 the Regiment was renamed 5 Armoured Medical Regiment. At current a number of personnel from the Regiment are deployed in Sierra Leone in support of the Ebola crisis.
