The Countess attended Mentoring Foundation's 2016 Colloquium & RHS Chelsea Flower Show

Today in the morning, The Countess of Wessex attended the Mentoring Foundation's 2016 Colloquium at Inner Temple in London. The theme of this year’s Colloquium is "Mentoring in Action": Developing and Sustaining the Pipeline of Talented Women in the UK.

The Colloquium was also attended by Sir Philip Hampton, who was appointed in February to succeed Lord Davies as Chair of the Women on Boards Review being undertaken by the government, and Mr Andy Higginson, Chairman, Wm Morrison Supermarkets plc. The event was chaired by Mr David Roberts, Chairman, Nationwide Building Society.

The Mentoring Foundation owns and operates the leading, internationally recognised, FTSE 100® Cross-Company Mentoring Executive and Next Generation Women Leaders Programmes. The Mentoring Foundation provides their Mentees with a network of opportunity, helping senior women break through to the top of UK corporations and otherwise progress their careers.

The Countess of Wessex is a huge supporter of helping women launch their business careers, through her work with The Duke of Edinburgh's Award Women's Network Forum &The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Women in Business Group.

Afterwards, in the late afternoon, Her Majesty The Queen and His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh attended the RHS Chelsea Flower Show at the Royal Hospital Chelsea. Other members of the royal family who attended: The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge (for the very first time).

Also Prince Harry, The Duke of York with Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, The Princess Royal, The Countess of Wessex, The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, The Duke of Kent, Prince and Princess Michael of Kent and Princess Alexandra. Prince Edward was absent as he is currently visiting Ghana (23rd May - 26th May) as part of his role with The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Scheme.

On arrival the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh walked through a floral arch marking Her Majesty's 90th birthday, before being greeted by the President of the Royal Horticultural Society, Sir Nicholas Bacon.

The Countess of Wessex toured the gardens and saw displays including '5000 poppies', an Australian community tribute of remembrance for those who have served their country in wars and conflicts.

The display of crocheted or knitted poppies at Chelsea has been designed and co-ordinated by acclaimed Australian landscape designer Phillip Johnson. He won the Gold Medal and Best Show Garden at the Chelsea Flower Show in London in 2013 with his Trailfinders Australian garden, winning friends and influencing many people all around the globe.

The flower of remembrance, poppies, are a symbol of eternal sleep. Their rich red colour represents all those left on a battlefield in wartime. Red is also the colour of the dress coats worn by some 300 retired soldiers from the British Army known as Chelsea Pensioners. They live at the The Royal Hospital at Chelsea in London, where the iconic Royal Horticultural Society Chelsea Flower Show founded in 1913 is held annually. You will learn more here

The RHS Chelsea Flower Show was established in 1913, in the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea in London, and has become one of the world’s greatest showcases for horticultural excellence, attracting visitors and exhibitors from across the globe.

Since its beginning, the show has gone from strength to strength. It has grown from 244 exhibitors in 1913 to over 500 today, including gardens, nurseries, floristry, educational displays and trade stands. Today the show attracts 165,000 visitors.
