RAF Wittering celebrates 100th anniversary with Honorary Air Commodore The Countess of Wessex

Today, RAF Wittering celebrated its 100th anniversary with their Honorary Air Commodore, HRH The Countess of Wessex & Station Commanders past and present.

RAF Wittering in Cambridgeshire is one of the oldest RAF bases in the country with the airfield that was first used by the Royal Flying Corps in 1916. Back then planes were mostly used for aerial photography of the battlefields.

The Royal Air Force was formed towards the end of the First World War in April 1918. RAF Wittering officially opened in 1924. The Central Flying School was at Wittering from 1926 until 1935, when it became a fighter base, and the CFS moved to RAF Upavon.

RAF Wittering has marked its centenary earlier today, by officially unveiling a new monument in the village churchyard with the service that commemorated the close link between the base and local community. More in the ITV News, here.

As a bonus, I can share with you pictures taken by Draperstalone, who, while taking a walk in the Kensington Gardens had quite a rare opportunity to see HRH The Countess of Wessex boarding a helicopter at Kensington Palace.
