Diamond Anniversary of The Duke of Edinburgh's Award at Buckingham Palace with Prince Philip and The Earl & Countess of Wessex

Yesterday, on the 16th May, more than 1,000 young people from across the UK were invited to celebrate the Diamond Anniversary of The Duke of Edinburgh's Award (DofE) and to attend a very special, once in a life time, Gold Award Presentation at Buckingham Palace, London.

The DofE is celebrating its Diamond Anniversary throughout 2016, having supported millions of young people to achieve DofE Awards since it was founded in 1956 by Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh. The prestigious Gold Award Presentation at Buckingham Palace is one of many memorable events taking place to celebrate 60 years of the Charity.

Members of the Royal Family; HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, HRH The Earl and The Countess of Wessex, congratulated those present including young Gold Award achievers, organisations that deliver the DofE and special guests, including actress Anna Friel, Ben Cohen, Ronan Keating and Anton du Beke, who had all been drafted in to help TRH's to hand out badges and certificates.

According to The Telegraph, as well as young people who have just finished their Gold Awards, some of the earliest recipients were invited back to share the day. They included Tony Mullins, 76, from Birmingham, who was one of 49 boys receiving Gold Awards in the Bow Room at Buckingham Palace in 1958.

Some of the star guests were so inspired by the stories they heard that they decided to take on their own DofE Diamond Challenge, including Jon Culshaw  (impressionist and comedian), who told the Duke of Edinburgh he is planning on going around the London Olympic Stadium track 60 times in a Dalek from Doctor Who. “The biggest hurdle is going to be getting the people who look after the Daleks to let me borrow one, because this would be a force for good, but they don’t really like them doing things that aren’t evil.”

The DofE launched the DofE Diamond Challenge in January 2016 to celebrate its Diamond Anniversary and give everyone a flavour of the life-changing benefits of The Duke of Edinburgh's Award, all whilst generating funds for the Charity so that it can reach out to even more young people in the future and offer free places and bursary grants to those most in need.

People can register for the DofE Diamond Challenge here and challenges can take place any time before 31 December 2016. Signing up to the DofE Diamond Challenge has an amazing double benefit - whilst challenging yourself and pushing your boundaries, you're also raising money for the DofE Charity so that it can transform the lives of more young people and offer free places and bursary grants to those most in need. And that's exactly what HRH The Countess of Wessex is doing with her Diamond Challenge!

Anyone aged between 14 and 24 can do a DofE's programme at one of the three progressive levels which, when successfully completed, lead to a Bronze, Silver or Gold Duke of Edinburgh's Award.  There are four sections at Bronze and Silver level and five at Gold.
  • Volunteering: undertaking service to individuals or the community.
  • Physical: improving in an area of sport, dance or fitness activities.
  • Skills: developing practical and social skills and personal interests.
  • Expedition: planning, training for and completion of an adventurous journey in the UK or abroad.
At Gold level, participants must do an additional fifth Residential section, which involves staying and working away from home doing shared activity.

Director of Education of The Youth Commission for Guernsey and Alderney, Alan Brown, said:
"DofE is not just about the expedition, although this is one of the key activities that young people experience as part of completing the Awards. The programme also ensures our young people develop a range of skills, are able to push their personal boundaries and also give something back to our community by volunteering in a range of different ways. Completing a DofE Award ensures our young people can stand out from the crowd, enhance their CVs, gain skills that will stay with them throughout their lives but also enjoy the challenge of doing new things and meeting new people.I would hope that these opportunities remain open to all our young people for the next 60 years thanks to the Duke of Edinburgh's Award."

There is a lovely video of the event at ITN (click here and scroll down a bit) in which The Earl and Countess talked to The Duke of Edinburgh that Lady Louise took part in every pageant celebrating HM's 90 birthday at Windsor. Sophie said: 'Because Louise did the whole of the week, she did all the performances. And the first night I was there, and they actually announced her name and I was like no, no, no, don't do that (laughs)'. Then HRH said to Prince Edward 'you took your hat off, which actually made you more recognisable' to which he says 'that's why I put the bowler on, because you can't take a helmet off." '.
