On the eve of HM The Queen's 90th Birthday, Buckingham Palace released stunning portraits to mark the monarch's milestone. A sequence of three official photographs of Her Majesty The Queen, were taken by the renowned portrait photographer Annie Leibovitz at Windsor Castle just after Easter.
First portrait in the series of 3, brings together the youngest members of the immediate Royal Family with the head of state. It is an intimate and very touching image. HM The Queen is surrounded by her five great-grandchildren and her two youngest grandchildren.
Portrait was taken in the Green Drawing Room, part of the castle's semi-state apartments. When I saw it for the first time, I was just amazed, how much all children have grown!
The children are, from left: James, Viscount Severn (aged 8) and Lady Louise Windsor (12), the children of the Earl and Countess of Wessex; Mia Tindall (holding the Queen's handbag), the two-year-old daughter of Zara and Mike Tindall - the youngest of the Queen's eight grandchildren. Savannah (5) and Isla Phillips (3), daughters of the Queen's eldest grandson Peter Phillips and his wife Autumn. Prince George (2) and, in the Queen's arms and in the tradition of royal portraiture, the youngest great-grandchild, Princess Charlotte (11months), children of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
The second portrait in the sequence is of the Queen with her daughter, the Princess Royal, taken in the White Drawing Room at Windsor Castle. After Victoria Murphy's article: "No-nonsense Anne seems like the least touchy-feely person in the Royal Family who you might imagine would need persuading to put her arm around anyone. But the warmth between the two women is obvious and the fact The Queen chose this picture tells us how much she values her, often unsung, daughter". For more, click here.
The third in the sequence features the Queen walking in the private grounds of Windsor Castle. The Queen is seen on steps at the rear of the East Terrace and East Garden with four of her dogs: clockwise from top left Willow (corgi), Vulcan (dorgie), Candy (dorgie) and Holly (corgi).
All I can say is huge Happy Birthday to HM The Queen! Long may she reign!!!
Patricia Treble wrote a lovely article about those stunning portraits, in which she says: "The most important role for Queen Elizabeth II is to be a matriarch. The head of the house of Windsor is in the ultimate family business, one passed down through generations, dynasties and centuries. So for her 90th birthday on April 21, it was only fitting that the Queen would be surrounded by her family in a series of official portraits taken by the American celebrity photographer Annie Leibovitz over Easter. They were taken in her childhood home, Windsor Castle, a place in which she’s perhaps the most comfortable. It’s where her grandchildren, including Princes William and Harry, know they can drop by for a tea, a chat and a ride". Full article can be found here. Coverage also in Express, here and People Magazine, here.
