The Countess of Wessex was greeted by Trust's Chairman Sir John Major upon her arrival. Afterwards, the guests have taken seats to hear a speech by Trust's Chairman who said: ‘Her devotion to wellbeing and prosperity has been the essence of her long reign. I would like to express my gratitude and that of the Trustees to all those who are making the Trust’s work possible'.

Then came the highlight of today's event, as The Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust in the presence of HRH has screened for the very first time a film about pioneering work to end avoidable blindness in the Commonwealth. And we all know this issue is very close to The Countess.

"In celebration of her service {HM's] to the Commonwealth throughout her long reign, we are proud to launch “Double Joy” to reflect the lasting legacy we aim to leave in her honour". You can view this very touching and inspirational movie here.

This new film covers the work of Dr Hilary Rono, who provides a vital eye care in rural Kenya. Dr Rono is leading research trials in Kenya for a smartphone based eye testing kit called PEEK (Portable Eye Examination Kit). Through his PhD, funded by The Trust, he has documented the incredible advances that can be made in restoring sight just by improving access to eye care.

In his words: “Big change always begins small. People running marathons always begin slowly, but actually when they reach the middle they sprint towards the end. Right now we are at the beginning. We have partners, we have academics, we have the Trust, and all these people are working in tandem, and they are at the start of the revolution. Then we will recruit more community health workers, they’ll start owning the process. And those community workers will recruit more villagers, and that will be the beginning of us winning the race of eliminating avoidable blindness.”

I'm ending my post with a wonderful photo of HM The Queen, woman who is a constant inspiration to me, and many of you as well, I'm sure of that. HM, on the eve of her twenty-first birthday, on 21 April 1947, shared the words which stayed with her throughout her long and admirable reign: "I declare before you all that my whole life whether it be long or short shall be devoted to your service and the service of our great imperial family to which we all belong".

This photograph of The Queen, shared by The British Monarchy was taken by the renowned British photographer Mary McCartney and it has been released to mark the moment Her Majesty becomes the longest reigning British Monarch. The photograph was taken at Buckingham Palace in July in The Queen's private audience room. Her Majesty is seated at her desk, with one of her official red boxes. You can read more about the picture and famous red box here.

Another wonderful personal tribute to HM The Queen was shared by The Sun's Royal photographer, and very gentle man, Arthur Edwards. A must - read. Article here.

For HM The Queen, today was business as usual, HM accompanied by The Duke of Edinburgh and Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, has formally opened the new £294m Scottish Borders Railway. During the opening HM, humbly as ever said: 'Many, including you First Minister, have also kindly noted another significance attaching to today, although it is not one to which I have ever aspired. Inevitably, a long life can pass by many milestones. My own is no exception. But I thank you all and the many others at home and overseas for your touching messages of great kindness'.
