HRH attends European Wheelchair Basketball Championships, during which GBR women & men teams qualified for Rio 2016!

Today, The Countess of Wessex as Patron of the British Wheelchair Basketball, attended the European Wheelchair Basketball Championships, at the Worcester Arena in Worcester. My post on HRH's Patronage can be found here.

The Countess arrived early in the afternoon, to watch women teams compete for the gold in the final match. But judging from one specific photo, The Countess of Wessex was also eager to learn when the GBR men gold medal match starts as well.

Today we saw the final match between women's teams of The Netherlands & Germany. And it was Germany team who beated the Netherlands 72-62 and took on the Euro 2015 women's gold.

Sadly, the GBR women team lost by 1 point to Germany in Semi-finals and came third, but this was more than enough to qualify for Rio 2016 Paralympic Games! Huge congrats!

GBR women bronze medallists were congratulated by The Countess of Wessex during the medal ceremony. Head Coach Miles Thompson said: “Our goal was to get to the final, so it’s disappointing to come in third. But this team, the athletes, are so strong in spirit and the way they approach all the hard work that I couldn’t be prouder and I couldn’t be more optimistic about Rio."

We know we’re here to stay; we know we can play with anybody in the world – we know we can beat anybody in the world. Now we’ve just got to go do it.”

After the press release by British Wheelchair Basketball: "Held from the 28th August to the 6th September at the University of Worcester Arena, the European Wheelchair Basketball Championships forms part of UK Sport’s National Lottery funded #EveryRoadtoRio programme, which targets events that will support the nation’s athletes in their preparation and qualification for the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games."

"The continent’s sole wheelchair basketball qualifying event for next year’s Games, the Championships has seen 19 teams from across 12 nations battle it out at the University of Worcester Arena: the top five men’s teams and top four women’s teams earning their 2016 Paralympic place."

As I am finishing my post, the Gold Match between Great Britain and Turkey is underway! Both men's teams of course already qualified for Rio 2016. But we shall see who will collect the gold today! I am keeping my fingers crossed for GBR and will let you know and update my post in due time. Great gallery of pics from today, click here.
