11th September, is the day we all remember, as one of the most tragic days in human history. But some people and organizations are trying to make a difference and won't let the bad to overcome the good.
Every year,
BGC Partners and
Cantor Fitzgerald, in conjunction with the
Cantor Fitzgerald Relief Fund, commemorate the 658 Cantor and the 61 Eurobrokers employees who perished on September 11, 2001 by distributing 100% of their global revenues on Charity Day to the Cantor Fitzgerald Relief Fund and dozens of charities around the world. Since its inception, Charity Day has raised approximately $113 million globally. Each anniversary is a poignant occasion for them. "
Charity Day is our way of turning a tragic day into one that is positive and uplifting by helping others".
One hundred per cent of the revenues generated goes to worthwhile causes and the day operates at BGC offices around the world, including New York, Paris, Singapore, Hong Kong, São Paulo and Sydney. "
After celebrating our 10th year of BGC Charity Day last year where the amount we raised took our total to over $113 million donated to a range of charities, our focus remains the same – to raise as much money as we can for these worthy causes worldwide", said Shaun Lynn / President of BGC Partners.
In London, The Countess of Wessex visited the trading floor of BGC's offices in Canary Wharf in her capacity as President of
National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children and
Mencap's Royal Patron. The Countess has been President of the NSPCC since 2012, my post can be found
here and it was the first time for the charity to be involved in the BGC Charity day. The Countess has helped to complete trades, as well as she has met staff and charity supporters.
For Mencap, this year was the second time the charity has been selected as one of the charities to benefit from the day. The Countess has been
Mencap's Patron since 2004, my post here. Joanda Appleby, corporate development manager at Mencap, said: "
From our perspective, the funds raised with BGC Partners will be an incredible boost to help us support more young people with a learning disability into work." Find out more

The Duke of Cambridge and Prince Harry attended BGC Charity Day in 2013 as Patrons of
SkillForce and
WellChild, respectively. I should add, that The Duchess of Cornwall was due to addend this year as well, in her capacity as Joint President of
Elephant Family, the charity founded by Her Royal Highness's late brother, Mark Shand. However, she was forced to cancel her engagements because of a bout of gastroenteritis.
